Birefringent Filters is a linear retarder that is made commonly from Quarts in a laser reasonator to tune its output wavelength and adjust its optical bandwidth. They are typically placed at Brewster’s angle, while rotating about its axis to achieve full wave retardation at the targeted wavelength. The targeted wavelength undergoes P-polarisation will be observed without reflection loss, while the others undergoes s-polarisation with reflection loss.

Quartz are excellent birefringent crystals. Due to its high UV, VIS, and NIR transmittance, and its ability to rotate polarized light and high damage threshold, it is very useful for transmittance from 190-2900nm wavelength. With high hardness properties, it is commonly in the retardation used plate. Quartz can exhibit circular birefringence allowing the ordinary and extraordinary beam to propagate with the same velocity using the same refractive index. Hence its effect is useful in rotators.
