Current Pulsers and Laser Diode Drivers (Pulsed Current)



These instruments generate current pulses whose amplitude is largely independent of the load voltage. This makes them ideal for pulsing device whose voltage may vary with time (for instance, the voltage drop of laser diodes may vary with temperature, or explosive squibs which change impedance during ignition). This voltage independence is a trade-off with speed. If faster rise times are required, consider using pulsed voltage instruments instead.


AV-106 Series

The AV-106 series of pulse generators is designed for pulsing laser diodes and other low impedance loads with current pulses as high 100 Amps, with wide pulse widths. The AV-106A family provides up to 30 A with pulse widths variable from 0.5 to 50 us and 50 ns rise and fall times. These units will operate with a load voltage in the range of 0 to 30 V, and exhibit less than a 5% change in current for a load voltage change of 30 Volts. For higher currents, the AV-106B family provides up to 100A in the pulse width range of 2 to 200 us. For wider pulse width applications, the AV-106C family provides pulse widths to 1 ms and peak currents to 15 A. The AV-106D family provides pulse widths to 1 ms, peak currents to 5 A and duty cycles to 50%. The AV-106F family tolerates very high load voltages (up to 300V), making it ideal for testing laser diode stacks. The maximum current is 5A, with pulse widths up to 50 ms.


AV-107 Series

The AV-107 series of pulsed constant current generators is designed for pulsing diodes and other high-speed, highcurrent loads. This series offers an unusually wide compliance voltage range of 0 to 60V. Model AV-107B-B provides amplitudes of up to 2 A, with pulse widths from 20 to 200 ns, and 10 ns rise times, at frequencies to 20 kHz. Model AV-107C-B provides up to 10 A and a pulse width range of 100 ns to 1 us (optionally 20 us), with 20 ns rise times, at frequencies of up to 5 kHz. Model AV-107D-B operates to 500 Hz, with PW variable from 0.1 to 5 us, amplitudes variable up to 20 A, and 30 ns rise and fall times. For applications requiring much wider pulse widths (of up to 200 us) the 2.5 Amp Model AV-107E-B is available. The compliance voltage range for all models is 0 to 60 V.


AV-151 Series

The AV-151 series is a family of high-voltage (or, for the AV151F, high-current) function generators and variable-gain amplifiers. All models include both an internal oscillator that can generate sine, triangle, and square waves, and a variablegain amplifier mode, which permits generation of more complex high-voltage waveforms. The AV-151F-B and AV-151K-B, unlike the above models, offer current-mode outputs. That is, the output amplitude is set in terms of current, rather than voltage. The output current is largely independent of the load voltage, as long as the load voltage is within the specified compliance range. The AV-151F-B provides up to ±2 Amps with a compliance voltage range of ±5 Volts, at frequencies of up to 20 kHz. The AV-151-K-B provides up to ±100 mA, for voltages of up to ±100V, at frequencies of up to 10 kHz.


AV-156 Series

The AV-156 series of pulsed constant current generators was designed for a wide variety of component testing applications. The AV-156 series is used to test a wide range of devices, including laser diodes, LED lighting arrays, airbag squibs, fuses, power resistors, and power semiconductors. All AV-156 models described here include IEEE-488.2 GPIB and RS-232 computer control interfaces, making them ideal for many automatic test and R&D applications. 


Model AV-156K-B is a +0.01 to +2 Amp pulser, with 200 ns rise and fall times. The pulse width is variable from 1 us to 10 ms, with repetition rates to 100 kHz. The maximum duty cycle is 80% for amplitudes below 1A, and 40% for amplitudes to 2A. The usable load voltage range is 0 to +20 Volts. Model AV-156A-B is a +0.01 to +5 Amp pulser, providing 4 us rise times, pulse widths from 10 us to 10 ms (100 ms optional), pulse repetition frequency (PRF) to 10 kHz and a load voltage range of 0 to +15 Volts. The model AV-156G-B is similar, but the maximum amplitude is increased to 10 Amps, and the maximum duty cycle is 10%. The load voltage of both the AV-156A-B and AV-156G-B can be increased to +25V by adding the -HC option. Model AV-156L-B is a +0.02 to +20 Amp pulser, providing 15 us rise times, pulse widths from 30 us to 3 ms, pulse repetition frequency (PRF) to 1 kHz and a load voltage range of 0 to +32 Volts. The AV-156M-B offers an unusually high compliance voltage of 350V, with peak amplitudes up to 1.5A, making it useful for testing series arrays of LED lighting devices. 


For more complex test applications, two dual-channel units are available. Model AV-156E-B is dual-channel 5 Amp, 25 Volt unit ideal for airbag squib testing. The output pulse widths are independently variable up to 100 ms. The amplitudes are also independently variable. One of the two channels has a variable delay, of 0 to 1.0 seconds. The pulse repetition frequency is variable from 1 to 100 Hz and the unit includes pushbutton and external triggering capability. Both channels share a common trigger. The AV-156E-B offers 10 us rise and fall times. Model AV-156F-B is a similar dual-channel pulser, but offers higher amplitudes of 0 to +10 Amps, with 4 us rise & fall times. The pulse repetition frequency is variable from 0.5 to 50 Hz.
