BaF₂(Barium Fluoride) is a crystal that has good transmittance over a wide spectrum range of 150nm-12.5um. It is transparent from the UV to Infrared, from 150-200nm to 11-11.5um. It has been used for functions in windows for infrared spectroscopy such as fuel oil analysis, lenses, prisms and especially UV transmittance. High grade BaF₂ can even be used for scintillation crystals, where it is one of the fastest for the detection of x-ray, gamma-rays, and high energy particles.

Of note, BaF₂ is used for cross-polarized wave generation (XPW) with Z[001] or holographic [011] crystallographic orientation. XPW generation is a non-linear 3^rd order process where the generated wave has the same frequency as the incident wave but is perpendicularly polarized. Other applications of BaF₂ is the detection of 511keV gamma photons in positron emission tomography (PET), preopacifying agent in enamel and glazing frits production and as welding agents.
