Very High Speed Pulse Generators

Very High Speed Pulse Generators

Rise Time ≤ 1 ns

There are a few series under the Very High Speed Pulse Generator. The name of these series are AV, AVP, AVMP, AVPP, AVI, AVMR and AVR.

AV Series

The AV-1030-B offers very high performance in an easy-to-use general-purpose lab instrument format. The AV-1030-B has a front-panel keypad and liquid crystal display, and IEEE-488.2 GPIB, RS-232, and Ethernet computer-control ports. Settings can be changed using the front-panel menus, or by computer commands sent over the various ports. The AV-1030-B provides 300 ps rise times, repetition rates to 10 MHz, amplitudes of up to ±5 Volts, pulse widths of 10 ns to 1 ms, low jitter, variable delay, and a sturdy metal chassis.

AVP Series

The AVP series of pulse generators offer the fastest rise times available in the Avtech product line, with 20%- 80% rise times as low as 80 ps. The AVP-AV-1S-C model provides amplitudes of up to 5V, with 80 ps rise times and 200 ps fall times. The pulse width is adjustable from 200 ps to 4 ns. The maximum pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is 1 MHZ. This model is not available with computer control functionality. The remaining models below (with the “-B” suffix) do offer computer control functions. The AVP-AV-1-B provides amplitudes up to 10V, pulse widths of 0.4 to 4 ns, and 120 ps rise times. The AVP-AV-HV2-B provides amplitudes up to 20V, pulse widths of 0.3 to 2 ns (optionally 4 ns), and 120 ps rise times. The high-voltage AVP-AV-HV3-B operates to 40V, with pulse widths variable from 0.4 to 2 ns (optionally 4 ns), and 150 ps rise times. For wide-pulse applications, the AVP-AV-2-B provides output pulse widths variable from 2 to 50 ns at frequencies as high as 50 kHz. The rise time is 150 ps.

AVMP Series

The AVMP series of pulse generators offer 10V or 20V outputs with sub-nanosecond rise times, and pulse widths variable from several nanoseconds up to 100 ns, 1 us, or 10 us. The 10 Volt AVMP-2-B family provides 120 ps rise and fall times. The pulse width can be varied from 10 to 100 ns. The maximum PRF is 1 MHz, and the maximum duty cycle is 10%. The AVMP-2A-B family is a 10 Volt model that offers a wider pulse width range, of 10 ns to 1 us, with 200 ps rise and fall times. The maximum pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is 500 kHz, and the maximum duty cycle is 5%. For wider pulse widths, the AVMP-4 family operates from 10 ns to 10 us, with 200 ps rise and fall times. The maximum frequency is 1 MHz, and the maximum duty cycle is 10%. The 20 Volt AVMP-3-B family provides 200 ps rise and fall times. The pulse width can be varied from 10 to 100 ns, and the PRF is variable to 1 MHz. The AVMP-3A-B family is similar, but offers and extended pulse width range of 10 ns to 1 us, and the PRF is variable to 100 kHz.

AVPP Series

The AVPP series combines the pulse circuitry used in the AVP and AVMP families to provide extended pulse width ranges, going as low as 400 ps and as high as 1 us. The AVPP-1-B provides amplitudes of up to 10V, for pulse widths of 0.4 to 100 ns. The rise time is less than 120 ps for pulse widths greater than 5 ns, and less than 150 ps for narrower pulses. The fall time is less than 150 ps for pulse widths greater than 10 ns, and less than 420 ps for narrower pulses. The maximum duty cycle is 10%. For applications requiring wider pulses, the AVPP-1A-B provides pulse widths of 0.5 ns to 1 us, amplitudes to 10V, and rise times of 200 ps. The maximum repetition rate is 500 kHz, and the maximum duty cycle is 5%. The higher-voltage AVPP-2-B provides 200 ps rise times for amplitudes to 20V, and pulse widths variable from 0.5 to 100 ns. The wider-pulse AVPP-2A-B provides pulse widths of 0.5 ns to 1 us, with amplitudes to 20V, rise times of 200 ps, and fall times of 200 ps (500 ps for pulse widths below 8 ns). The maximum repetition rate is 100 kHz, and the maximum duty cycle is 5%.

AVI Series

The AVI series provides high amplitude (up to 100 Volts) pulses with rise times as low as 300 ps. The AVI-V-B family has rise times of 300 ps, pulse widths of 2 to 100 ns, variable amplitudes to 50V, and repetition frequencies up to 20 kHz. The 40V AVI-V-3L-B family offers operation at pulse repetition frequencies as high as 100 kHz, with 500 ps rise and fall times. The pulse width is adjustable from 1 to 20 ns. The higher-voltage AVI-V-HV2B-B family provides rise times of 600 ps, pulse widths variable from 4 to 100 ns, variable amplitudes of up to 100V, and pulse repetition frequencies of up to 20 kHz. The AVI-V-HV3A-B family is similar, but with slower rise times of 1.5 ns.

AVMR Series

The AVMR series offers medium-voltage operation at relatively high pulse repetition frequencies. Model AVMR-1A-B provides pulses with amplitudes variable to 10 Volts, and pulse widths variable from 6 ns to 200 ns. The maximum pulse repetition frequency is 10 MHz. The rise times are less than 150 ps (see the sample waveform above). The higher-voltage AVMR-2A-B provides pulses with amplitudes variable up to 20 Volts, and pulse widths variable from 6 ns up to 200 ns. The maximum pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is 10 MHz. The rise times are 200 ps or less. Model AVMR-2D-B offers an extended pulse width range of 0.5 ns to 200 ns. Model AVMR-2J-B is similar to the AVMR-2A-B, but with slower rise and fall times. (This slower variant is generally not subject to the same governmental export controls that may apply to those models with ≤ 500 ps rise/fall times (US ECCN 3A230). Model AVMR-3-B offers amplitude to 50V, with pulse widths variable from 10 to 100 ns, and pulse repetition frequencies to 3 MHz. The rise and fall times are 2.5 ns

AVR Series

The AVR-E family offers medium-to-high voltage pulses with very fast rise and fall times. The AVR-E1 series provides peak outputs to 20V, with pulse widths variable from 10 to 200 ns, pulse repetition frequencies to 200 kHz, and rise times of 300 ps. The minimum pulse width can optionally be reduced to 1 ns. The maximum pulse width can optionally be increased to 5 us (subject to a maximum duty cycle limit of 5%). The AVR-E2 series has similar pulse width ratings, but offers a higher maximum amplitude of 50V, with 500 ps rise times and 1 ns fall times. The AVR-E3 series offers a maximum amplitude of 100V, with 500 ps rise times, and a maximum PRF of 100 kHz. The AVR-E2A and AVR-E3A models are similar to the AVR-E2 and AVR-E3 models, but with slower rise times (< 1.5 ns) and fall times (< 2.5 ns). These slower, lowercost variants are generally not subject to the same governmental export controls that may apply to those models with ≤ 500 ps rise/fall times (US ECCN 3A230). The narrow-pulse AVR-E4 series can generate 100V pulses with pulse widths variable from 1 to 5 ns, at repetition rates to 100 kHz. The AVR-E5 series covers the pulse width range of 1 to 10 ns, with 50V maximum amplitude and a maximum repetition rate of 1 MHz. The AVR-E6 series covers the pulse width range of 8 to 30 ns, with 100V maximum amplitude and a maximum repetition rate of 2 MHz.

Key Features

Connectivity - A variety of connectivity options is made available (based on model variation). Standard conectivity includes: IEEE-488.2 GPIB and RS-232 computer control feature for models with -B.

Software - Labview drivers are available for selected models.

Ethernet Ports and Remote Operation - Selected models have Options to add an ethernet port allowing the devices to be remotely accessed and controlled with secure protocols.

Front Panel Interface - The interface contains memory to store up to four complete instrument setups. The operator can use the front panel or the computer interface to store a complete "snapshot" of all key instrument settings, and recall this setup at a later time. This simplifies the setup of frequently performed experiments.
