Digital Micromirror SLM

SIMTRUM's  Digital Micromirror Device is a type of spatial light modulator that modulates the amplitude, direction, and/or phase of incident light. A DMD is an array composed of multiple high-speed digital light reflectors, consisting of many small aluminum mirrors. The number of mirrors corresponds to the display resolution, with each micromirror representing a pixel, and the switching speed can reach several thousand times per second or higher.

Compared to TFT-LCDs, which have low transmittance and contrast, DMDs offer high reflectance and high contrast. By imaging an object onto the DMD and utilizing its pixel-level controllability along with its high flip frequency, each pixel can be sequentially scanned to a detector, enabling high-speed passive point scanning imaging of objects under visible light conditions during the day. When combined with light sources and optical components, DMDs can achieve speed, accuracy, and efficiency far surpassing other methods of spatial light modulation for binary graphics.

Each micromirror in the DMD can pivot individually around a hinge axis by +/- X° (with X typically being 12° nominally). The mirror’s deflection of +12° (on) and -12° (off) is controlled separately by changing the binary states of the underlying CMOS control circuit and the mirror reset signals. Light reflected from mirrors in the on state passes through the projection lens to the screen, and the image is modulated to grayscale by controlling the duration of the on and off states.

Incoherent holographic 3D imaging

The system consists of two target channels in different axial planes, where a digital micromirror device (DMD) is used as target 1 in channel 1 and an amplitude-type spatial light modulator is used as target 2 in channel 2. The light from the spatial incoherent light-emitting diode (LED) is collected by a concentrator to illuminate the object, and then the diffracted object light within the two channels is combined through a beam-splitting prism (BS1) and collimated by lens L. The polariser P aligns the polarisation direction of the object light with the modulation axis direction of the pure phase SLM. Finally, the light waves modulated by the pure phase SLM are recorded by a CMOS sensor. Pure phase SLM loads holograms synthesised by the GSA algorithm.

Software interface

Key features of the software include:

1. Integrate various specific light field control functions: including diffraction light field, non-diffraction light field, structured light field, etc.

2. Integrate more than 20 experimental projects, 35 Zenick polynomials, and support superposition between phase maps;

3. Real-time online adjustment and control of various light field parameters;

4. Quickly correct wavefront aberration according to actual needs;

5. It can be expanded independently, and it can be dynamically displayed in external input mode;

6. Independently select the playback mode to achieve high-speed refresh playback;

7. Open program interface, open the functional interface of the image processing part in the form of SDK, and support a variety of development languages, including Labview, C/C++, etc.
