CaF₂(Calcium Fluoride) is an optical crystal that occurs as a natural mineral. It has excellent UV, mid IR and NIR transmittance, high laser damage threshold, low axial and radical stress birefringence, high refractive index homogeneity. While not only being highly resistant to dryness and moisture, the high laser damage threshold of CaF2 and high internal transmission >99.7% at critical wavelength of 193nm makes it very suited for deep UV excimer laser optics. It is also a good UV optical material for IC (integrated circuit) lithography in beam delivery illumination and projection systems.

CaF₂ also has low refractive index compared to other optical materials which means it benefits from lower Fresnel loss. In addition, it has high abbe values, giving it low spectral dispersion and this can avoid chromatic aberration errors and 

improve image contrasts with less color correction involved. With a wide 

transmission range and low index and dispersion, other applications of CaF2 

include astronomical and field telescopes, analytical equipment, optical 

window, prisms, infared lasers, and optical components for excimer set-ups.
