Nd:YAG(neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet Y3Al5O12) is a crystal that is suitable for high powered and Q-switched lasers due to its good fluorescent lifetime thermal conductivity and crystal strength. It has a four-level gain medium with a narrow gain bandwidth, giving it high gain efficiency and low threshold pump power. The most common emission wavelength out of the four-gain medium is 1064nm. The next common one would be the 532nm wavelength by Q-switching used for dermatology purposes. 


Nd:YAG can go up to fourth order harmonic generation. While increasing the concentration of neodymium doping can reduce pump absorption length, excessive doping can quench the upper-state lifetime due to the up-conversion process.
